Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson will give evidence against claims he deliberately misled Parliament at a cross-party privileges committee of MPs on Wednesday. His 52-page written evidence, released ahead of the televised hearing, has already admitted he accepts his comments made were misleading but denies he made them intentionally. Mr Johnson said in his dossier: “I accept that the House of Commons was misled by my statements that the rules and guidance had been followed completely at No 10. But when the statements were made, they were made in good faith and on the basis of what I honestly knew and believed at the time.”
He will be questioned about his leadership during the pandemic and actions surrounding the Partygate scandal by seven MPs, chaired by Labour’s Harriet Harman. They will then write a report on whether Mr Johnson misled Parliament and recommend sanctions.
Misleading Parliament is a breach of the ministerial code, if Mr Johnson is found guilty there is a range of sanctions that could be issued. These include a written apology, docking of salary or suspension from the Commons.
Should Mr Johnson be suspended for 10 days or more, a recall petition would automatically be triggered, allowing voters in his Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency to trigger a byelection.
