Newcastle's search for a manager could go on after reports emerged that talks for Eddie Howe had taken a turn for the worse. The former Bournemouth boss was supposed to become Magpies manager, but it remains to be seen if a move will be completed after a deal to take his backroom staff to St James' Park could not be agreed.

Howe was present at the Amex Stadium for Newcastle's game against Brighton on Saturday, suggesting he could well still be the new man in charge. But with the Tynesiders you just never know what is around the corner.

Express Sport looks at three potential options for Newcastle to consider if a deal breaks down...

Sean Dyche

Dyche recently celebrated his ninth anniversary as Burnley manager, with the club having enjoyed their best period since the 1970s under his control.

Currently embarking on their sixth-consecutive season in the Premier League, Dyche has made a name for himself as a relegation-escaping expert.

With Newcastle rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, there is no better time for the former Watford defender to prove himself at another club.

And with money no object at Newcastle, he could mould his own team and make the Magpies a force to be reckoned with.

Steven Gerrard

Gerrard has experienced much success at Rangers since he joined in 2018.

The Liverpudlian won the Scottish Premiership last season to stop Celtic's nine-year dominance of the title, and has made his side a comfortable European outfit, beating Porto, Feyenoord, Galatasaray and Braga.

The young manager has a fruitful career ahead of him, and would represent a progressive signing for an ambitious side.

He knows the Premier League well also, having played in the league for 16 seasons.

However, it may take a lot to prise him from Rangers given Newcastle's precarious position in the Premier League.

Franck Haise

Haise has developed a reputation as one of the best up-and-coming managers in Europe since his appointment at French side RC Lens in 2020.

The Sang et Or finished seventh last season after being promoted from the second tier the season before.

And Haise's side have gone one better this season, currently occupying second after a superb start to the season.

Aged just 50, Haise could have a very long spell at Newcastle should he make the switch.witch.
